Intent
Our aim at Meadowhead Infant School is for all children to enjoy mathematics and have a secure and deep understanding of fundamental and mathematical concepts and procedures. We want children to see the mathematics that surrounds them every day and enjoy developing vital life skills in this subject. At Meadowhead we are on a journey to adopting mastery approach to teaching maths with a strong focus on the CPA (concrete, abstract and pictorial) methods.
At Meadowhead Infant School our intent is to enable all children to:
- Develop a positive attitude to mathematics as a subject in which all children gain success and pleasure through a mastery approach.
- Have access to a high quality Mastery maths curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable. Building upon previous learning through small, connected steps of learning.
- Be provided with a variety of mathematical opportunities (relating to real life), which will enable children to make relevant connections.
- Are confident mathematicians who are not afraid to take risks.
- Develop an ability to express themselves fluently, to talk about the subject with assurance, using correct mathematical language and vocabulary through the use of STEM sentences.
- Develop mathematical skills and knowledge and recall of basic number facts and the four operations
- Make use of concrete, practical and abstract (CPA) methods to allow children to gain a deeper understanding
Implementation
Across school, we follow the White Rose Hub Scheme of Work which supports the mastery approach to teaching Mathematics. Click on the different documents below to see the breakdown of the curriculum for each year group and also our calculation policy.
We we are also placing an emphasis on the importance of developing children’s fluency. Our aim is to increase children’s quick recall of facts and their ability to recognise and make connections between different contexts. There is a daily 10-minute fluency session across school, to enable the children to practise basic facts and develop flexibility with these facts. We are currently trialling the Mastering Number Programme delivered by the NCETM. This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.
